What were the salaries of graduates?

Both historically and in this release, earnings data reported by HESA are in nominal terms. This means graduate earnings have not been adjusted for inflation to reflect the purchasing power of those earnings.

Figure 13 shows:

  • At an overall level, the £24,000-£26,999 band contains the highest proportion of graduates in full-time paid UK employment.
  • Just over 6 in every 10 females were earning salaries below £27,000 compared with just under 5 in every 10 males. 
  • A higher percentage of White graduates were earning salaries below £27,000 than graduates from ethnic minority backgrounds.
  • A higher proportion of graduates with a known disability were also earning salaries below £27,000 when compared with graduates with no known disability.

Figure 14 shows:

  • Among 2019/20 graduates, those who studied computing saw the largest difference between high skilled and low skilled median salaries at £9,500. This is followed by mathematical sciences and engineering & technology; £8,500 and £8,000 respectively.
  • For non-science subjects, graduates who studied education and teaching saw the largest difference between high and medium skilled median salary at £7,500, while for science subjects, graduates who studied medicine and dentistry saw the largest difference between equivalent skill levels at £14,000.

The DfE published analysis on Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) with new data on Graduate industry included from May 2022. Note that this data is based on the 2018/19 tax year.

How are science subjects defined?

The science grouping is an aggregation of CAH level 1 codes CAH01 through to CAH13 and CAH26 with the exception of CAH26-01-03 (Human geography). CAH26 (Geographical and environmental studies) has been disaggregated so that CAH26-01-03 (Human geography) is presented in the non-science grouping labelled as 'Geographical and environmental studies (social sciences)'. All other CAH level 3 codes within CAH26 are presented in the science grouping labelled as 'Geographical and environmental studies (natural sciences)'. This grouping of science subjects has been created by HESA.

Where were graduates employed?

Figure 15 presents information on the movement of UK students from home to study and on into work. It shows the number of graduates domiciled from a specified region and the flow of movements between that region and the rest of the UK. Figure 16 providers further detail on Figure 15, showing the specific regions that graduates move between.

Figure 16 shows:

  • 2019/20 graduates who were in UK work at the time of the survey were most likely to be working in the same region as that which they were domiciled from.
  • The East of England had the lowest percentage of graduates who worked in the same region as that which they were domiciled from, at 53% among 2019/20 graduates. Conversely, Scotland was the region with the highest percentage of graduates working in the region from which they were domiciled, at 88%.
