  • Income of higher education institutions £27.9 billion in 2011/12

    HE Finance Plus 2011/12 shows that the total income of higher education institutions (HEIs) in 2011/12 was £27.9 billion. Funding bodies provided £8.3 billion of this income, while tuition fees and education contracts contributed £9.7 billion.

  • Staff in UK higher education

    Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2011/12 shows that there were 181,385 academic staff employed at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on 1 December 2011. 65.0% of academic staff were employed full-time, and 63.8% were employed on permanent or open-ended contracts.

  • HE qualifications awarded

    Students in Higher Education Institutions 2011/12 shows that 787,205 higher education qualifications were awarded by UK higher education institutions (HEIs) in 2011/12. Approximately half of these qualifications were first degrees, one third were postgraduate qualifications and one sixth were other undergraduate qualifications (such as foundation degrees, credits and diplomas of higher education). 

  • Staff at higher education institutions in the United Kingdom 2011/12

    This is the first release of data from the 2011/12 HESA Staff record. The release provides details of staff employment at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on 1 December 2011. It has been produced in partnership with the UK administrations and is released in accordance with the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

  • Non-UK domicile students

    Data from the HESA Student record for 2011/12 shows that there were 2,496,645 students in higher education in the UK in 2011/12. Of these 2,061,410 (82.6%) were UK domicile students, 132,550 (5.3%) were from other EU member countries and 302,680 (12.1%) were from non-EU countries.

  • Higher education student enrolments and qualifications obtained at higher education institutions in the United Kingdom for the academic year 2011/12

    This Statistical First Release (SFR) has been produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in collaboration with statisticians from the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Welsh Government (WG), the Scottish Government (SG) and the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland (DEL(NI)). It has been released according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. It provides details of student enrolments and qualifications obtained by higher education (HE) students at HE institutions (HEIs) in the United Kingdom (UK) for the academic year 2011/12.

  • New Chair of HESA Board

    Professor Simon Gaskell, Principal of Queen Mary University of London, has been appointed Chair of the HESA board. Professor Gaskell replaces Professor Dame Julia King, Vice Chancellor of Aston University, who stood down as Chair and board member on 27 September 2012.

    Professor Mark Smith, Vice Chancellor of Lancaster University, has been appointed to the HESA board, having been nominated by Universities UK. Professor Smith replaces Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kent, who also stood down on 27 September.

  • Foreword - Higher Education Statistics 2010/11

    HESA is pleased to present the annual official statistical overview of higher education in the United Kingdom (UK) for the year 2010/11. This is the latest edition in a series that was initiated by the then Department for Education in 1993. It is a National Statistics publication.

    The volume aims to present a comprehensive set of statistical information about a range of aspects of the UK higher education sector.

  • Higher Education Statistics for the UK 2010/11

    The HESA publication Higher Education Statistics for the United Kingdom 2010/11 is released today. The National Statistics publication provides the official overview of the UK’s higher education sector in 2010/11 and is available as a paper volume or downloadable publication. The publication contains data from HESA, the Student Loans Company, OECD, UCAS and the Labour Force Survey. Commentary, summary tables and charts are provided in a free online introduction.
