Professor Simon Gaskell, Principal of Queen Mary University of London, has been appointed Chair of the HESA board. Professor Gaskell replaces Professor Dame Julia King, Vice Chancellor of Aston University, who stood down as Chair and board member on 27 September 2012.

Professor Mark Smith, Vice Chancellor of Lancaster University, has been appointed to the HESA board, having been nominated by Universities UK. Professor Smith replaces Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kent, who also stood down on 27 September.

HESA is pleased to present the annual official statistical overview of higher education in the United Kingdom (UK) for the year 2010/11. This is the latest edition in a series that was initiated by the then Department for Education in 1993. It is a National Statistics publication.

The volume aims to present a comprehensive set of statistical information about a range of aspects of the UK higher education sector.

The HESA publication Higher Education Statistics for the United Kingdom 2010/11 is released today. The National Statistics publication provides the official overview of the UK’s higher education sector in 2010/11 and is available as a paper volume or downloadable publication. The publication contains data from HESA, the Student Loans Company, OECD, UCAS and the Labour Force Survey. Commentary, summary tables and charts are provided in a free online introduction.

The HESA electronic publication Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Institutions 2010/11 is published today. The publication provides detailed results of the DLHE survey, which asks UK and EU domicile graduates what they are doing six months after graduation.

63% of full-time first degree graduates reported that they were in employment only, with a further 8% both working and studying. 16% were in further study only and 9% were unemployed.

Employment indicators are published today on the HESA website.

The full tables show the indicators for every HE institution in the UK alongside their benchmark.

This Statistical First Release (SFR) has been produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), in collaboration with statisticians from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Welsh Government (WG), the Scottish Government (SG) and the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland (DEL(NI)). It has been released according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. It provides details of the destinations of UK and other European Union domiciled leavers from higher education (HE) who obtained qualifications in higher education institutions (HEIs) in the United Kingdom (UK), during the academic year 2010/11. The data presented draws on the 2010/11 Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey and presents five year time series analyses relating to the 2006/07-2010/11 DLHE surveys.

HESA electronic publication 'HE Business and Community Interaction Survey 2010/11' released today

Results of the 2010/11 HE Business and Community Interaction Survey, published today, show that UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) made £1.1 billion through research contracts with businesses and non-commercial organisations. A further £1.4 billion of income was derived from consultancy contracts, facilities and equipment, CPD courses, intellectual property, and regeneration and development programmes.

Finances of Higher Education Institutions 2010/11 shows that students' higher education tuition fees contributed £8.3 billion to the income of UK HE institutions. £2.9 billion of this income came from non-EU domicile students' tuition fees.

The chart below shows, for each country of the UK, the proportion of tuition fee income from different kinds of students. The differing profiles of each country reflect, among other things, the different fee regimes in each administration. The chart is taken from the online introduction to Finances of Higher Education Institutions 2010/11 and based on data from Table F.

Indicators for Widening Participation and Non-continuation are published today on the HESA website.

HE Finance Plus 2010/11 shows that the total income of higher education institutions (HEIs) last year was £27.6 billion. Funding bodies provided £8.9 billion of this income, while tuition fees and education contracts contributed £9.0 billion.
