Not all data fields within EMR are compulsory. Where a cell is blank, the HE provider has not returned any information.

  • Estates ratios using capital expenditure (2015/16)

During 2015/16 the University of Sunderland carried out a higher than normal level of construction work which has resulted in higher than normal capital expenditure data. This included work on the construction of a new building (Hope Street Xchange). The building work was still on-going at the end of the 2015/16 EMR reporting period therefore our space figures do not include this building. As a result ratios comparing our Capital Expenditure figures in relation to space are much higher than in the previous year.

As a result of the level of construction work being carried out during the year, our total waste figures were also much higher than in the previous year. Consequently, ratios comparing our total waste figures to space or staff or student figures are also much higher than in the previous year.

The Hope Street Xchange building was completed in February 2017. Unless EMR reporting requirements change, the building will not appear in our figures for 2016/17 as it is entirely commercial space and will therefore be excluded from EMR.

  • Natural Gas Consumption (2013/14 - 2016/17)

Prior to 2016/17, Harper Adams University included the value of EECNGSEX - Energy consumption natural gas excluding that used as input for a CHP unit as part of the value of EECCNGAS - Energy consumption compressed natural gas. As such EECNGSEX is incorrectly shown as 0 and values for EECCNGAS have been over-reported.

  • Non-residential insurance premiums, contributions and replacement value (2015/16)

In 2015/16, Plymouth College of Art incorrectly reported both their (FNRIPCO) Non-residential insurance premiums and contributions and (BNRIRV) Non-residential insurance replacement value. The correct values should be £32,139 and £62,464,027 respectively.

  • Other works waste mass recycled (2015/16)

Liverpool Hope University incorrectly returned their Other works waste mass recycled (t) for 2015/16. The accurate data entry is 118.330 tonnes.

  • Scope 1 and 2 carbon emission baseline

For the years 2012/13 to 2018/19 Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine stated Total scope 1 and 2 emission baseline for 2005 as 83,228,000.000. This field was returned in kilograms CO2e instead of in tonnes CO2e.The figure should have been 83,228.000 tonnes CO2e.

  • Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions steam and hot water (2012/13 to 2016/17)

The University of the Arts London has noted that the values automatically calculated by HESA recorded in the 2012/13 – 2016/17 Estates Management record returns for E12CESHW - Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions steam and hot water are incorrect due to the provider sharing a CHP district heating system for which they do not incur any carbon emissions. The correct value is zero.

The provider has confirmed that in each of these returns the E12CET - Total scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions value has been overridden to include the correct value for E12CESHW.

  • Waste (2014/15 to 2016/17)

Plymouth College of Art submitted incorrect figures for 4 waste fields in the Estates management return in 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 due to their waste provider supplying them grossly incorrect estimated figures based on overall lorry capacity, rather than kg per bin. Revised estimated figures based on average kg per bin have been supplied to replace this data as per the table below.
