  • Disabled students' allowance 2019/20

University Centre Quayside Limited came in scope for the HESA data collection in late 2019/20 and retrospectively collected DSA information from their students. Data in Table T7 should be treated with caution as it is likely to be an undercount of the true number in receipt of DSA.

  • Disabled students' allowance 2019/20

A change in external reporting of DSA information to providers in Scotland for the 2019/20 student return has led to some Scottish providers not returning complete DSA information for their students. Data in Table T7 should be treated with caution as it may be undercounting the number of students in receipt of DSA at Scottish providers. The following providers have been excluded from table T7 due to incomplete DSA information: Glasgow Caledonian, The University of Strathclyde.

  • Disabled students' allowance 2020/21

Changes in the administration arrangements for DSA awards in Scotland will have led to the under-reporting of students in receipt of DSA at some Scottish providers. The numbers of students recorded as being in receipt of DSA at the Open University in Scotland has been particularly affected by this due to the University’s distance student support model.

  • Domicile (2011/12)

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David misreported the domicile of 224 full-time postgraduate students within their 2011/12 Student return in error. These students have been coded as UK domiciled rather than non-EU domiciled and as such would normally be excluded from the majority of published DLHE data. These students were not surveyed and therefore the postgraduate full-time UK domiciled student response rate for University of Wales Trinity Saint David has been affected.

  • Duplication of Northern Irish FEC's

Among graduates from 2017/18, there were 175 from Northern Irish providers that were duplicated in the dataset. These graduates were all taught at a Further Education College (FEC) but were awarded their qualification by a Higher Education Institution (HEI). Both the FECs and HEIs returned contact details for each graduate. Of the 175 graduates, 130 should have been returned by the FECs only and 45 of the graduates should have been returned by the HEIs only. Because these graduates were duplicated, they would have been invited to survey twice for their qualification.

In 2019/20, Birkbeck College omitted to flag any of their staff as Early Career Researchers. The true value should have been approximately 25 staff.

  • Economics & econometrics students (2012/13, 2013/14)

In 2013/14, the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne has seen an increase of 738 FTE to cost centre Economics & econometrics, from 16 in 2012/13 to 754 in 2013/14.  This was due to the majority of FTE for this cost centre being returned under Business & management studies in 2012/13 in error, which has now been corrected for 2013/14.

  • Education subject area (2013/14)

In 2013/14, Cardiff University had a significant increase in students studying within the Education subject area, from 980 in 2012/13 to 1,450 in 2013/14.  This was due to the start of a new Master's programme in Educational Practice.

  • Employment (2011/12 publication onwards)

In 2011/12, the questions on the Destinations of Leavers from HE (DLHE) questionnaire were modified and as a result, the concept of activity was redefined for use in HESA publications. The DLHE population was also extended to include leavers with additional qualifications. Both of these factors had an impact on the employment indicators making data prior to 2011/12 not comparable with data from 2011/12 onwards; see the changes document for more details (applicable to table E1).

  • Employment (2015/16 publication)

The University of Surrey made an error in the student data causing 186 nursing students to be omitted from the DLHE return which will have affected the indicator (applicable to table E1a).

Due to changes in system processes resulting from the merger between University College London and Institute of Education, the number of students in the full-time other undergraduate category who have been surveyed for the DLHE is much lower than in the previous year. The full set of students will be surveyed in future years.

  • Employment activity (2015/16)

In 2015/16, King's College London misreported 145 leavers as being in further study whereas the majority were actually in employment.

  • Employment indicator (2015/16 publication)

From 2015/16, the reporting of the elements of the AP Student record for Unistats was compulsory. In order to fulfil the requirement to return data for publication on Unistats, providers were required to complete the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record, with the exception of those providers who were on ‘teach out’ when the DLHE data was collected. ‘Teach out’ means that new students were unable to access student support, but existing students were able to continue their studies with access to funding until completing. Under these circumstances, DLHE data was not expected to be returned.

Therefore the following Alternative Providers are included in the E1 table but did not participate in DLHE so data is shown as 0 and blank:

    • London College of Business Sciences
    • Christie's Education Limited
    • EThames Graduate School Limited
    • London School of Business and Finance (UK) Limited

  • Entry qualifications (2017/18)

Cardiff Metropolitan University incorrectly omitted some entry qualifications for first year first degree students in 2017/18. These were new qualifications. Of those omitted, 94% were Reformed A Levels. Also excluded were a collection of Level 3 Diplomas and Certificates. This has resulted in errors to tariff scores for these students.
