Over 4,000 new graduate start-ups in 2014/15

The survey results show the number of new and on-going spin-off companies associated with UK HE providers. 129 spin-offs were started with some provider ownership in 2014/15. 4,160 graduate start-up companies and 138 social enterprises were formed

Over 4,600 new graduate start-ups in 2013/14

The HE Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) Survey is completed by all publicly funded UK higher education providers and the results show the extent to which providers are embedded in the economy and communities of the UK. The HE-BCI publication, released today, displays the full survey results for every UK HE institution. This release provides the headline results for the UK and for each devolved administration.

Over 3,500 new graduate start-ups in 2012/13

The HE Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) Survey is completed by all publicly funded UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and the results show the extent to which HEIs are embedded in the economy and communities of the UK. The HE-BCI publication, released by HESA today, displays the full survey results for every UK HEI. This release provides the headline results for the UK and for each devolved administration.

The survey results show the number of new and on-going spin-off companies associated with UK HEIs. 126 spin-offs were started with some HEI ownership in 2012/13 and over 3,500 graduate start-up companies were formed. In 2012/13 active spin-off companies employed nearly 39,000 people (FTE).

Charity and commercial research adds £1.1 billion to UK HE income

HE Business and Community Interaction Survey 2011/12, published today, show that UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) made £1.1 billion through research contracts with businesses and non-commercial organisations. A further £1.4 billion of income was derived from consultancy contracts, facilities and equipment, CPD courses, intellectual property (IP), and regeneration and development programmes.

Results of the 2010/11 HE Business and Community Interaction Survey, published today, show that UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) made £1.1 billion through research contracts with businesses and non-commercial organisations. A further £1.4 billion of income was derived from consultancy contracts, facilities and equipment, CPD courses, intellectual property, and regeneration and development programmes.

HE Business and Community Interaction Survey 2009/10

The results of the 2009/10 HE Business and Community Interaction Survey are published today by HESA. The downloadable publication shows that 273 new spin-off companies were set up in 2009/10 to exploit intellectual property originating in UK higher education institutions (HEIs). A further 2422 new start-up companies were set up by staff and recent graduates of HEIs.
