Non-residential NIA other
return to field list
This field contains data about the Net Internal Area (NIA) of other non-residential space. The value can be recorded to three decimal places.
|Applicable to||England Northern Ireland Scotland Wales|
All higher education providers (HEPs).
|Unit||Square metre (m²)|
HE providers in England, Northern Ireland or Wales will need to return a value for this field to ensure that the mandatory field Non-residential NIA total is calculated correctly.
Other space is all other NIA, including space primarily kept for national and other purposes such as museums, art galleries etc. (e.g. Ashmolean Museum).
Providers should include Students Unions and staff housing (except wardens) under this category. Providers may also include conference venue space where the conference facility is run by the provider or a subsidiary of them and is entirely or primarily separate from the provider's academic and support facilities.
The exception of wardens should only be applied where their role is solely residential support. If the housing of this person includes anything other than their student warden responsibilities, then it should be included in this field.
Providers should return staff housing or accommodation under non-residential NIA, only where the accommodation is let to staff and not other third parties.
Where the associated costs, such as waste and energy cannot be separately identified for a commercial space area, NIA for the commercial space area should be included in the EMR under Total NIA commercial space (SMNIACT). Providers should return the commercial space area as per other areas under the appropriate space measurement field, in this case non-residential NIA other. Providers should also return the space under Total NIA commercial space. This way, the total commercial space area can be distinguished from Total NIA.
