Short nameSMNIATE

This field contains data about Net Internal Area (NIA) of teaching space (not offices). The value can be recorded to three decimal places.

Applicable toEngland Northern Ireland Scotland Wales

All higher education providers (HEPs).

UnitSquare metre (m²)

This field forms part of the calculation for Non-residential NIA total, which is mandatory for HE providers in England, Northern Ireland or Wales.

This field records the NIA of teaching space, which are not offices of the HE provider. It includes:

  • teaching rooms used for teaching,
  • lecture theatres used for teaching,
  • seminar rooms used for teaching,
  • laboratories used for teaching,
  • stores used for teaching,
  • computing facilities used for teaching,
  • workshops used for teaching,
  • any special curriculum-based buildings such as gymnasia and sports facilities,
  • other buildings (e.g. animal houses, greenhouses, farms, field stations, observatories etc.) if used for teaching and predominantly used by the HEP. If the HEP is not the predominant user of such facilities then include under Non-residential NIA other.

Where the associated costs, such as waste and energy cannot be separately identified for a commercial space area, NIA for the commercial space area should be included in the EMR under Total NIA commercial space (SMNIACT). Providers should return the commercial space area as per other areas under the appropriate space measurement field, in this case Teaching not offices NIA. Providers should also return the space under Total NIA commercial space. This way, the total commercial space area can be distinguished from Total NIA.
