Higher Education Provider Data: Finance

An update to our Finance open data to include UK higher education providers with financial year ends of January – July 2023.

Jisc recognises that we have provided less than the normal four weeks pre-announcement period for this publication. This is due to the need to adapt our publication schedules to account for the delay in publication of the 2022/23 student data.

Finance coverage

The annual HESA Finance record is the main source of historical financial information on the total activities of all UK higher education providers (HEPs). The record provides data in respect of the consolidated income and expenditure account, consolidated statement of total recognised gains and losses, consolidated balance sheet and consolidated cash flow statement.

Head of provider total remuneration

The head of provider total remuneration shown in Table 11 does not match that reported in The University of Sheffield’s financial statements. The figures reported here are overstated. The correct figures are:

Year ended 31 July 2020
Pension contributions £60k
Total remuneration £350k

Year ended 31 July 2021
Pension contributions £61k
Total remuneration £351k

Research income and expenditure

The University of Reading have made an error in data relating to their financial year ending in 2022. £2,556k of research income (Table 5) and £2,572k of research expenditure (Table 8) should have been reported under UK-based charities (open competitive process) rather than UK-based charities (other).
