Unistats record 2020/21 - Notification log
This document summarises all communications associated with the 2020/21 Unistats collection, from first publication of known changes to the record through to collection closure in July 2021. Please refer to the Revision history document for full technical list of changes to the specifications.
HESA issue regular communications during the life of a collection:
- Circulars: announcements to interested parties concerning or issues relating to the collection. Circulars are always made available on the HESA website for later reference, and emailed out to the mailgroup for the collection.
- Coding manual release overviews: these document iterative changes to the technical documentation that define the form of the data to be submitted, as well as being a place to host resources associated with collecting that data.
2021-06-07 Coding manual release - version 1.11
Version 1.11 includes the following changes:
Guidance and valid entries have been updated for KISCourse.TTCID.
The link to the Office for Students web site page from where a list of valid LDCS codes can be downloaded has been updated within KISCourse.LDCS.
Updates have been made to both the accreditation information table and list of KIS course aims.
2021-03-10 Coding manual release - version 1.10
Version 1.10 includes the following changes:
- The Discover Uni widget user guide has been updated.
2021-01-25 Coding manual release - version 1.9
Version 1.9 includes the following changes:
- References to DLHE have been replaced with Graduate Outcomes in KISCourse.KISMODE.
- Further guidance has been added in ILRAims and HESACourse.
2020-10-28 Coding manual release - version 1.8
Guidance changes have been made to the following field:
Dates have been confirmed/updated for sections 'Official Statistics publication of 2020 Unistats dataset on the HESA website', 'Update of Discover Uni website with 2020 dataset' and 'Deadline for up to date widgets on providers' websites' in the Data collection schedule.
The details within the Unistats output schema and Unistats dataset file structure and description have been changed.
2020-10-13 Coding manual release - version 1.7
The publication date for the section 'Official Statistics publication of 2020 Unistats dataset on the HESA website' has been updated from 14 October 2020 to 21 October 2020 in the Data collection schedule.
2020-10-02 Coding manual release - version 1.6
The publication date for the section 'Official Statistics publication of 2020 Unistats dataset on the HESA website' has been updated from 5 October 2020 to 14 October 2020 in the Data collection schedule.
2020-09-24 Coding manual release - version 1.5
The date for the section 'Official Statistics publication of 2020 Unistats dataset on the HESA website' has been updated from 28 September 2020 to 5 October 2020. The date for the 'Discover Uni website with 2020 Unistats dataset' section has also been updated from 29 September 2020 to 'By the end of October 2020' in the Data collection schedule.
2020-08-26 Coding manual release - version 1.4
The following documentation has been added to the coding manual:
- The Linking to other datasets.
- Covid-19 Exceptional guidance.
- Changes to Unistats dataset 2020-21.
- Discover Uni widget user guide.
- Unistats output schema.
- The Unistats dataset file structure and description.
Guidance changes have been made to the following fields.
Dates have been confirmed/updated for sections 'Graduate Outcomes and NSS data added','Official Statistics publication of 2020 Unistats dataset on the HESA website', 'Update of Discover Uni website with 2020 dataset' and 'Deadline for up to date widgets on providers' websites' in the Data collection schedule.
References to 'Student Alternative' have been replaced with 'AP Student record (now called Student Alternative from C19054) on the following pages

- The Publication arrangements documentation.
The Accreditation information table has been updated, more detail can be found on the Accreditaiton table revision history page.
The List of KIS course aims table has been updated, more detail can be found on the KIS course aims revision history page.
2020-06-17 Coding manual release - version 1.3
Version 1.3 of the coding manual includes the following changes :
The Accreditation information table has been updated, more detail can be found on the Accreditaiton table revision history page.
Figure 1 has been updated to show the new website 'Discover Uni' in Location.LOCNAME and Location.LOCNAMEW.
A nil return sign-off form has been added under the 'Submission process and quality assurance' section of the coding manual.
Further guidance has been added to Institution.SUURL.
Section July 2020 has been updated to 'Graduate Outcomes and NSS data added'. Also a link to the support guide has been added to provide additional information under the section 'valid data submission required' in Data collection schedule.
2020-04-29 Coding manual release - version 1.2
Version 1.2 of the coding manual includes the following changes :
Guidance changes have been made to the Data collection schedule and HESACourse.
Valid entries have been updated for KISCourse.TTCID.
The following documentation has been added to the coding manual:
- The HESA XML data entry tool,
- The How to use the HESA XML data entry tool guide,
- The Quality rules,
- The Validation kit downloads,
- The Validation overview.
2020-04-02 Coding manual release - version 1.1
Version 1.1 of the coding manual includes the following changes :
- Guidance changes have been made to Institution.Location and Institution.SUURL
The following documentation has been added:
- The Accreditation information table,
- The Data collection schedule,
- The Data requirements for new courses,
- The List of KIS course aims,
- The Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs) and course accreditation guidance,
- The Publication arrangements documentation,
- The Subcontractual and collaborative provision,
- The Unistats dataset,
- The Years to which fields relate.
2020-02-14 Coding manual release - version 1.0
Version 1.0 of the coding manual includes the first release of documentation for Unistats record 2020/21.
- The coverage has been reviewed to provide additional clarity.
- The Introduction has been reviewed to provide additional clarity, with this the URL for OfS has also been updated.
