Capital expenditure £3.1 billion in 2012/13

HESA publication 'Finances of Higher Education Institutions 2012/13' released today

Finances of Higher Education Institutions 2012/13 shows that UK HE institutions (HEIs) spent £2.4 billion on buildings and £0.7 billion on equipment in 2012/13, giving a total capital expenditure of £3.1 billion.

The table below shows the capital expenditure of HEIs by location and type of expenditure:

Sources of funds

In 2012/13 £2.0 billion of HEIs' capital expenditure came from internal funds, accounting for 64% of the total. Funding council grants of £0.4 billion accounted for 12% of capital expenditure.

Finances publication

Finances of Higher Education Institutions 2012/13 is a downloadable publication which contains 12 tables of income and expenditure data at institution, regional and national level from the HESA Finance Statistics Return. Finances of Higher Education Institutions 2012/13 is available to purchase now.

The free online introduction to the publication includes sector level tables and charts covering balance sheet information, tuition fee and research income, and expenditure by type and department. Table 1 of the publication, showing income, expenditure and surplus/deficit of each UK HEI, is published as a free online data table.

  2. HESA Finance data is collected from all publicly funded Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK, plus the University of Buckingham, which is a non-publicly-funded institution. The 2012/13 data covers 161 HEIs (129 in England, 10 in Wales, 18 in Scotland and 4 in Northern Ireland).
  3. Financial data relates to the HEIs' financial year, i.e. 1 August 2012 to 31 July 2013.
  4. Capital expenditure covers all expenditure which increases the value of an institution's fixed assets, including the purchase of land, buildings, and those items of equipment which are included in the institution's register of fixed assets and shown in the balance sheet.   5. In 2012/13 an English Institution misreported a number of items within Table 8 of their 2012/13 FSR return. As a result, their data has been removed from the Buildings and Internal funds columns of the tables in this press release. The totals shown for England and the UK therefore do not match the sums of each column.
