Collection design project

We have launched the Data Futures programme to create a more efficient and timely approach to data collection across the sector. The programme aims to deliver a new approach to data collection beginning in 2019/20.

The Collection Design project has built upon work by the HEDIIP Data Language project. In the three design phases, it has proposed, consulted and published collection schedules, specifications and models to support in-year collection.

This had the goal of defining a model of student data collection to meet the requirements of a broad range of stakeholders, and to allow HE providers to adopt a more efficient and effective approach to data submission.

The project closed at the end of February 2017 as scheduled in the wider Data Futures programme. The outputs from the project will inform and steer the Detailed Design phase, which started March 2017. Project documents are available in the Data Futures Resources area. We will continue to communicate and consult as the design further evolves into and through the alpha and beta phases.

Please note all documents are part of recommendations for the Detailed Design phase, and should be considered work in progress as part of the Data Futures programme.

Documents available in Data Futures Resources are listed in the table below:

Document/s Description
NEW: Collection Model

Developed from the 'data journeys' document originally available in HE providers: V3 supply side, the Collection Model document includes:

  • Collection model definition
  • What happens at the end of the Reference Period?
  • Reference Period timing
  • The significance of Segments in the collection model
  • Indicative Reference Periods
  • Continual submission and quality assurance
RENAMED: Collection Mapping

Originally named ‘Translation mapping’ in V3: Implementation Approach.

Collection Mapping shows mapping of collection design to existing collections and fields. The mapping shows the rows that have changed between V3 and V4 in red.

Logical Model Developed from V3: Logical Model
RENAMED: Collection Specification

Update of the segment model and 7 segment visualisations represented in the Logical Model and originally available on V3 Implementation page:

  • Segment model
  • S0 Organisations and Venues
  • S1 Courses and Modules
  • S2 Registration
  • S3 Enrolment
  • S4 Learning Event
  • S5 Leaver
  • S6 Funding and Monitoring
Quality Assurance Comprises Quality Assurance: Approach and Quality Assurance: Implementation pages
Data Dictionary In V3 Implementation, the Data Dictionary is still at version 3, so does not reflect the changes to the segments updated to V4 in the Collection Specification in Data Futures Resources.

We are reviewing the data specification and will publish an update to the data dictionary in the coming months.

Derived Fields Derived fields has not updated from V3, and should be considered as indicative content.
