Characteristics of Academic Staff in 2014/15

Data published today show that there were 198,335 academic staff employed at UK HE providers in 2014/15. When analysed by cost centre (a proxy for academic departments) nearly a quarter of these staff (24%) were working in the areas of medicine, dentistry and health.

HESA publication 'Staff in Higher Education 2013/14' released today

Staff in Higher Education 2013/14 shows that there were 194,245 academic staff employed at UK higher education providers (HEPs) on 1 December 2013 and 201,535 non-academic staff.

There were 396,000 staff employed at UK HE providers in 2013/14, of whom 194,000 (49%) were academic staff.

HESA publication 'Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2012/13' released today

Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2012/13 shows that there were 185,585 academic staff employed at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on 1 December 2012. 55.5% of academic staff were male. 30.9% were aged 51 years or over and 66.0% were employed full-time.

Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2011/12 shows that there were 181,385 academic staff employed at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on 1 December 2011. 65.0% of academic staff were employed full-time, and 63.8% were employed on permanent or open-ended contracts.

Higher Education Statistics for the UK 2010/11

The HESA publication Higher Education Statistics for the United Kingdom 2010/11 is released today. The National Statistics publication provides the official overview of the UK’s higher education sector in 2010/11 and is available as a paper volume or downloadable publication. The publication contains data from HESA, the Student Loans Company, OECD, UCAS and the Labour Force Survey. Commentary, summary tables and charts are provided in a free online introduction.

45% of full-time first degree leavers enter managerial and professional jobs

The HESA electronic publication Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Institutions 2010/11 is published today. The publication provides detailed results of the DLHE survey, which asks UK and EU domicile graduates what they are doing six months after graduation.

63% of full-time first degree graduates reported that they were in employment only, with a further 8% both working and studying. 16% were in further study only and 9% were unemployed.

HESA electronic publication 'Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2010/11' released today

Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2010/11 shows that there were 381,790 staff employed at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on 1 December 2010. Academic staff made up 47.5% of all staff.

Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2009/10

The new electronic publication, Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2009/10 is published today by HESA. This new publication replaces the former 'Resources of HE Institutions' printed product which addressed both staff and financial data.

Staff in Higher Education Institutions 2009/10 shows that there were 181,595 academic staff employed at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on 1 December 2009. Of these, 44% were female, up from 41.9% four years previously. 12.0% of academic staff were from an ethnic minority compared to 10.7% in 2005/06. Nearly a quarter (24.0%) of academic staff in 2009/10 were of non-UK nationality.

The HESA reference volume Resources of Higher Education Institutions 2008/09 is published today. Comparison with previous years' data reveals that the proportion of academic staff employed on fixed-term contracts has declined between 2004/05 and 2008/09.
