This document summarises all communications associated with the 2020/21 Student collection, from first publication of known changes to the record through to collection closure in October 2020. Please refer to the Revision history document for full technical list of changes to the specifications.

HESA issue regular communications during the life of a collection:

• Communications: announcements to interested parties concerning or issues relating to the collection. Communications are always made available on the HESA website for later reference, and emailed out to the mailgroup for the collection.
• Coding manual release overviews: these document iterative changes to the technical documentation that define the form of the data to be submitted, as well as being a place to host resources associated with collecting that data.

2022-10-05 Coding manual release overview - version 1.11

Version 1.11 of the coding manual includes the following change:

• First release of the Understanding the NSS reports document.

2022-09-14 Coding manual release overview - version 1.10

Version 1.10 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• Update of dates falling after 19 September 2022 in the data collection schedule.
• Guidance updates have been made to the field Student.LANGPREF.

2022-08-10 Coding manual release overview - version 1.9

Version 1.9 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• First release of the File structures for National Student Survey (NSS).
• First release of the nil return sign-off form.
• The reduced returns page has been updated for Type 03 'Incoming visiting and exchange students'.
• Guidance updates have been made to the fields Instance.EXCHANGE, Instance.FUNDCODE, Instance.MODE, and Mobility.MOBSCHEME.

2022-06-23 Coding manual release overview - version 1.8

Version 1.8 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of File structures for downloadable files:

• File structures for unistats.

Changes to fields and entities:

• Valid entry updates have been made to the field Instance.NHSEMP.
• Guidance updates have been made to the fields Course.AWARDBOD, EntryProfile.CARELEAVER, Instance.FUNDCODE, and Instance.NHSEMP.

2022-05-05 Coding manual release overview - version 1.7

Version 1.7 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of File structures for downloadable files:

• File structures for data supply files.
• File structures for postgraduate research (PGR) student collaborative provision.

Changes to fields and entities:

• Coverage updates have been made to the field EntryProfile.CARELEAVER.
• The reason required has been updated for the entity DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation and to the field ModuleSubject.COSTCN.
• Guidance updates have been made to the entities DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation and FinancialSupport as well as to the fields EntryProfile.CARELEAVER, EntryProfile.CRDPTSTU, EntryProfile.CRDSCM, EntryProfile.PREVINST, Instance.FEEELIG, Instance.MODE, and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

The Derived field specifications have been updated since the last coding manual release, more detail can be found in the Derived field revisions page.

2022-03-23 Coding manual release overview - version 1.6

Version 1.6 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

The following documentation has been added under the 'Submission process and quality assurance' section:

• HESA XML data entry tool.
• How to use the HESA XML data entry tool.
• Quality rules.
• Submit data to HESA.
• Validation kit.

• An appendix has been updated in the Derived field specifications more detail in the derived field revisions page.
• The C21051DataTypes.xsd schema has been updated.
• Guidance added to field Student.NATIOND to advise this field is no longer required and should not be returned for 2021/2022.
• Guidance updates have been made to fields Course.COURSEAIM, EntryProfile.QUALENT3, Instance.TYPEYR and Mobility.MOBSCHEME.

2022-03-04 Coding manual release overview - version 1.5

Version 1.5 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• Guidance updates have been made to the Data Collection Schedule.
• First release of the Derived field specifications for this collection, added under the 'Data specification' section.
• Guidance updates have been made to Further guidance on collaborative supervision arrangements.
• The reason required has been updated for field ModuleSubject.COSTCN.
• Guidance changes have been made to fields EntryProfile.QUALENT3 and Instance.TYPEYR.
• Valid entry changes have been made to the following fields QualificationsOnEntry.QUALGRADE and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2022-02-09 Coding manual release overview - version 1.4

Version 1.4 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• Dates have been amended within the Coding manual release schedule.
• Date changes and guidance updates have been made to the Data Collection Schedule.
• Changes have been made to the Reduced returns document within types 03, 04 and 08.
• Guidance updates have been made to the following fields Instance.EXCHANGE, Instance.FEEELIG, Instance.RSNEND, Instance.TREFNO, QualificationsAwarded.CLASS, QualificationsAwarded.OUTCOME, Student.DISABLE, Student.HUSID and Student.SSN.
• Valid entry changes have been made to the following fields Course.MSFUND and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2021-12-23 Coding manual release overview - version 1.3

Version 1.3 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• First release of the document Reduced returns has been added under 'Data specification' section.
• The 'Validate data locally using validation kit' date has been amended within the Data Collection Schedule.
• Coverage updates have been made to the fields EntryProfile.CARELEAVER, EntryProfile.PARED, Instance.EMPROLE, Instance.STULOAD.
• Guidance updates have been made to the following fields Instance.INITIATIVES, Instance.SDEMPLOY, Instance.SDLEAD and Student.SERSTU.
• Minimum occurrences and guidance has been updated for field Student.SEXID.
• Minimum occurrences has been updated for field Student.RELBLF.
• New valid entries added to the field QualificationsOnEntry.QUALGRADE, QualificationsOnEntry.QUALSBJ and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2021-10-18 Coding manual release overview - version 1.2

Version 1.2 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• Guidance updates have been made to the document Understanding student continuity and the UHN link.
• Coverage updates have been made to the fields Instance.INSTCAMP, Student.GENDERID, Student.RELBLF and Student.SEXORT.
• Guidance updates have been made to the following fields FinancialSupport.FINTYPE, Instance.LOCSDY.
• New valid entries and guidance has been added to the field Instance.INITIATIVES.

2021-09-10 Coding manual release overview - version 1.1

Version 1.1 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of further guidance:

• Further guidance on Apprenticeship Standards students
• Further guidance on collaborative supervision arrangements
• Further guidance on returning DfE programmes (excluding EYITT)
• Further guidance on returning Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) programmes
• Understanding student continuity and the UHN link.

Changes to fields and entities:

• Coverage update has been made to the entity QualificationsOnEntry.
• Coverage update has been made to the field Student.LANGPREF.
• The description, reason required, guidance and valid entry labels have been updated for the field Instance.FESTUMK.
• A new valid entry and guidance has been added to the field Instance.INITIATIVES.
• Guidance updates have been made to entities DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation and FinancialSupport.
• Guidance updates have been made to the fields DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation.PCODELOC, EntryProfile.APELCRD, EntryProfile.CARELEAVER, EntryProfile.CRDPTSTU, Instance.FEEELIG, Instance.FEEREGIME, Instance.FUNDCODE, Instance.GROSSFEE, Instance.LOCSDY, Instance.MODE, Instance.NETFEE, Instance.SPECFEE, Instance.STULOAD, Student.SSN, StudentOnModule.MODOUT, QualificationsAwarded.OUTCOME, QualificationsOnEntry.QUALGRADE and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2020-07-30 Coding manual release overview - version 1.0

Version 1.0 of the coding manual includes the following:

The following new fields have been added to the Student entity:

• Student.LANGPREF
• Student.SERSTU

Changes to fields and entities:

• New valid entries have been added to the fields Course.MSFUND, Instance.EXCHANGE, Mobility.MOBSCHEME, QualificationsOnEntry.QUALSIT.
• A new valid entry and guidance has been added to the field Instance.INITIATIVES, additionally a valid entry and guidance has been removed from this field.
• Amendments have been made to valid entries for field Instance.SPECFEE.
• Valid entries and related guidance have been removed from the fields Instance.FEEREGIME, Instance.FESTUMK and Instance.ITTPHSC.
• The field Instance.ITTSCHMS has been removed.
• Coverage and guidance updates have been to the entity FinancialSupport.
• Guidance updates have been made to EntryProfile.QUALENT3, Instance.EMPFUND, Instance.FUNDCODE and Instance.SPECFEE.
• The 'Secondary-level ITT programmes and ITT programmes' valid entries list for field CourseSubject.SBJCA has been updated.

Communication - April

This communication provides information about the agreed Student record changes for 2021/22. This communication sets out the results of the consultation process and summarises the changes that will be implemented for 2021/22.
