Providers in Wales

The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) have requested that a new valid entry is added to the Instance.INITIATIVES field for microcredentials courses at providers in Wales. The introduction of this valid entry will enable HEFCW to monitor these courses and any associated funding. Further information on this new valid entry will be published in due course.

HEFCW have requested that a new field is introduced to allow students to select their language preference for the Graduate Outcomes survey. The field will make the process of identifying the preferred language more straightforward and will ensure that students are surveyed in the appropriate language.

Notes

The Graduate Outcomes survey can be completed in English or Welsh (either in writing or over the phone)

This field records where the student has indicated that they have a preference for the language in which to be contacted.

This information will then be used to ensure that students at providers in Wales are contacted in their preference of either English or Welsh.

If the provider does not know this information, 99 Not available should be returned.

Reason required

To ensure students are contacted in their preferred language as part of the Graduate Outcomes survey in accordance with Welsh language legislation and in order to increase response rates for those who prefer to be surveyed in Welsh.

Providers in Scotland

The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) have requested that data be collected regarding the children of Service families as it is recognised that they face additional obstacles in accessing higher education (HE) and achieving their full potential. The sector is beginning to better understand the challenges and barriers faced by Service children. Much of this is covered in the Office for Students' publication Topic briefing: students from military service families which demonstrates the growing commitment to help this cohort of students.

The Scotland Hub of the Service Children's Progression Alliance, chaired by the Royal Caledonian Education Trust and with representatives from across Scotland's universities, Scottish Government and stakeholders, has agreed a definition of a Service Child for data collection purposes. It is:

"A person who has a parent or carer who served or is serving in the regular or reservist British Armed Forces (Royal Navy; Royal Marines; British Army; or Royal Air Force) at any point during the first 25 years of that person's life."

The data collected would enable HE providers, SFC and other public bodies to plan and to make informed decisions about how best to support students from military families.

A field will be added to the Student entity to collect this and will be specified as below:

Do you have a parent or carer who currently serves in the UK Armed Forces, or who has done so in the past?

Yes

No

Select Yes if you have a parent who currently serves in the Regular UK Armed Forces or as a Reservist or has done so at any point during the first 25 years of your life.

The Scotland Hub of the Service Children’s Progression Alliance, chaired by the Royal Caledonian Education Trust and with representatives from across Scotland’s HEIs, Scottish Government and stakeholders defines a Service Child as:

“A person who has a parent or carer who served or is serving in the regular or reservist British Armed Forces (Royal Navy; Royal Marines; British Army; or Royal Air Force) at any point during the first 25 years of that person’s life.”

This information should be updated where applicable.

Reason required

SFC requires Service Children to be identified as it is recognised that this group of students may require additional support.

The data would enable HE providers, SFC and other public bodies to plan and make informed decisions about students from service families.
