Initial Teacher Training record 2018/19 (C18053): Annual update

This is the formal notification of changes to the ITT Record for 2018/19.

Addition/Removal of Valid entries

Student.BURSLEV

Previously, students who did not achieve a 2:2 or above in their degree were entitled to a Tier 4 bursary in some circumstances. These bursaries are no longer available and so the following valid entry will be removed from the Student.BURSLEV field:

  • A: Tier 4

Student.INITIATIVES

The NCTL have confirmed that the Troops to Teachers initiative is no longer required from 2018/19. The following valid entry will therefore be removed from Student.INITIATIVES:

  • C: Troops to Teachers

From 2018/19 a new scheme will be introduced whereby providers and schools can bid for additional PE places if they are filled by students who will train in a priority subject alongside their main subject of PE.

More information can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/initial-teacher-training-itt-requesting-places-2018-to-2019

A new valid entry will be added to Student.INITIATIVES to monitor this:

  • Y: Additional ITT place for PE with a priority subject

Student.ITTSCHMS

The NCTL have confirmed that Student Associates Scheme is no longer available. The following valid entry will be removed from the Student.ITTSCHMS:

  • 2: Student Associates Scheme

Student.ENTRYRTE

From September 2018, the postgraduate teaching apprenticeship will be available. This is a school-led ITT route that combines paid work with on and off the job training, qualification and progression.

More information can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/postgraduate-teaching-apprenticeships-guidance-for-providers

A new valid entry will be added to Student.ENTRYRTE to monitor this:

  • 10: Postgraduate teaching apprenticeship

New fields and entities

Postgraduate teaching apprenticeship start date

Students studying on the postgraduate teaching apprenticeship route may begin the apprenticeship element of their course on a different date to the ITT course. A new field will be added to the collection to record the start date of the apprenticeship element. This will allow providers to submit the students only when they begin the ITT course, rather than when they begin the apprenticeship. This will only be required for students on the new apprenticeship route (new Student.ENTRYRTE=10) where the start date of the ITT course differs from the start date of the apprenticeship.

Service leavers

The NCTL require data regarding whether ITT students have left full time employment in the armed forces in the last five years. This is to track the number of Service leavers who enter Initial Teacher training to monitor The Department for Education’s commitment to the armed forces which includes helping ensure Service leavers get the support they need to make a successful transition back into civilian life.

A new field will be added to C18053 with the following valid entries:

  • Trainee has NOT LEFT full time employment in the British Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Navy in the past 5 years
  • Trainee has left full time employment in the British Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Navy in the past 5 years
  • Information refused
  • Not known

This will only be required to be collected for new starters and not continuing students.

Placement data

A new entity will be added to the ITT collection to collect information regarding the first placement planned for students. This will collect the placement school and the planned number of days for the placement. Providers will be able to optionally return subsequent placements

Additional information

Removal of Test commit

The Test-commit button will be removed from the collection for C18053. The Test-commit button was previously used to allow test data to be transmitted to the NCTL. This will be replaced by a report that allows providers to approve records to be sent to the NCTL’s system. This will allow data to be sent to the NCTL without requiring a test commit. Please note that full commit functionality will remain available and will be required to formally notify the NCTL that your data is ready to be viewed, particularly around the census data.

New timescales for C18053

The NCTL require information regarding students who have left part way through the year. There is currently a gap in this data between the January and July updates and so a new update window will be added in April 2019 for the C18053 collection. This will allow the NCTL to correctly allocate funding based on up to date information regarding students who have left.

Full details with be published in the C18053 coding manual.
