HESA will ensure those carrying out the coding are trained in SOC coding and the nuances around types of occupation. Providers will be able to raise concerns about coding, but it will be down to the contractor to make the final judgement on any amends to coding. The contractor will be required to evidence consistent practice of coding occupations across providers.

Part-automation is intended to start the process, rather than replace the process of manually checking codes. We anticipate the survey platform will take the user’s manually inputted occupation and allow them to match it with an automatic list of jobs. This coding will go through rigorous quality assurance processes – with assessors examining both the manually entered and automatic SOC codes.
