Notes on tables - First Destinations 2000/01

The list of institutions in the HESA reference volumes for 2000/01 has changed and the following institutions are no longer shown separately:

  • The College of Guidance Studies
  • North Riding College Higher Education Corporation
  • Westminster College
  • Wye College.
  1. The Institute of Cancer Research is now shown separately. It was previously included in the figures for the University of London (Institutes and activities) but is still an associated institute of the university.
  2. The following institutions have changed their names for 2000/01. The changes are as follows:
    • Cheltenham and Gloucester College of HE changed to University of Gloucestershire
    • The College of Ripon and York St John changed to York St John College
    • Cumbria College of Art and Design, Carlisle changed to Cumbria Institute of the Arts
    • The University of Lincolnshire and Humberside changed to The University of Lincoln.
  3. University of London is a confederal organisation. The colleges of the university, shown separately in the HESA reference volumes, are:
    • Birkbeck College
    • Institute of Education
    • Goldsmiths College
    • Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine
    • King’s College London
    • London Business School
    • London School of Economics and Political Science
    • London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
    • The School of Oriental and African Studies
    • The School of Pharmacy
    • Queen Mary and Westfield College
    • Royal Academy of Music
    • Royal Holloway and Bedford New College
    • The Royal Veterinary College
    • St. George’s Hospital Medical School
    • University College London
    • (Heythrop College is also a college of University of London, but is not included in HESA statistics as it is not publicly funded).

    In addition, the institutes within the umbrella of University of London (Institutes and activities) are:

    • British Institute in Paris
    • Courtauld Institute of Art
    • University Marine Biological Station, Millport
    • School of Advanced Study comprises:
      • Institute of Advanced Legal Studies
      • Institute of Classical Studies
      • Institute of Commonwealth Studies
      • Institute of English Studies
      • Institute of Germanic Studies
      • Institute of Historical Research
      • Institute of Latin American Studies
      • Institute of Romance Studies
      • Institute of United States Studies
      • Warburg Institute.
  4. The majority of students attending the Institute of Advanced Nursing Education are studying whilst in full-time employment, consequently a first destination return was not sought from this institution.
  5. Students of unknown ages are included in total figures but not in separate breakdowns.
  6. As a percentage of all students from whom a first destinations record was expected.
  7. Includes ‘undivided’ second class honours.
  8. Includes unknown employment category/mode of employment/duration of employment. Duration of employment is not collected for self-employed individuals.
  9. Duration of employment is not collected for self-employed individuals. These, together with others entering employment whose duration of employment is unknown, are only included within ‘Total going overseas’.
  10. Includes UK domiciled students whose region of employment was given as unknown but who are assumed to have remained within the UK.
  11. Includes students who are known to be UK domiciled but whose exact region of domicile is unknown.
  12. Includes self-employed and all categories of employment.
  13. Includes those with ‘Not reported’ mode of employment.
  14. ‘Others’ includes students who gave their main activity as seeking employment or training but, because they gave their secondary activity as employment, study or training, are not assumed to be unemployed. It also includes other EU students reported as returning overseas (no other information available).
