Notes to tables - Resources 2007/08

  1. Staff whose ethnicity is not known includes those who have been coded 'information refused'.
  2. Total academic staff includes staff whose nationality has been coded 'not known'.
  3. Staff whose gender is 'not known' have been included in totals but are not shown separately.
  4. Average age is calculated on actual age (as opposed to age groups) for staff with known age.
  5. Where comparisons are made between the latest financial year 2007/08 and the previous year 2006/07, the previous year's figures are those reported in the re-stated financial statements.
  6. The funding body grants for HE provision include Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council (SFC) grants for all provision.
  7. The funding body grants for FE provision are not applicable to SFC.
  8. The list of institutions in the HESA products for 2007/08 has changed.
    • Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the Carlisle campus and Penrith campus of The University of Central Lancashire merged with St Martin's College. St Martin's College changed its name to University of Cumbria
    • The Royal College of Nursing transferred provision of its HE distance learning programmes to The Open University
    • University Campus Suffolk is a joint venture between The University of East Anglia and The University of Essex. It completed a separate HESA student return for the first time in 2007/08. It has been accounted for in the HESA finance return by The University of East Anglia and The University of Essex
    • Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama merged with University of Glamorgan
    • Bell College merged with The University of Paisley.
  9. The following institutions have changed their names in the HESA products for 2007/08:
    • Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies changed to University College Birmingham
    • The University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, Rochester changed to University for the Creative Arts
    • St Martin’s College changed to University of Cumbria
    • Newman College of Higher Education changed to Newman University College
    • Norwich School of Art and Design changed to Norwich University College of the Arts
    • The North-East Wales Institute of Higher Education changed to Glyndwr University
    • Swansea Institute of Higher Education changed to Swansea Metropolitan University
    • The University of Paisley changed to The University of the West of Scotland.
  10. University of London is a confederal organisation. The colleges of the university, shown separately in the HESA reference volumes, are:

  11. For 2007/08 there was no 2006/07 restated data requirement for the two new Balance sheet Endowments sub-heads Endowments: Expendable and Endowments: Permanent. Total endowments continued to require a restated figure.
  12. Dartington College of Arts merged with University College Falmouth. However, both institutions continued to make separate returns for the HESA 2007/08 reporting period.
  13. Due to the particular nature of the structure of the UHI Millennium Institute, teaching and research activities are carried out by constituent partners and these staff have been returned as atypical. Non-academic staff at these partner organisations have not been returned.
  14. From 2005/06 the FSR submission to HESA from the Royal College of Music was completed on the basis adopted for the College's consolidated accounts in that the figures included the Prince Consort Foundation (PCF). As the PCF was wound up in 2007 and its assets transferred to the College, it is not included in the 2007/08 accounts. The 2006/07 comparatives also reflect the College's figures only.
  15. The University of Buckingham publishes audited accounts to 31 December each year. Consequently, the income and expenditure in these finance data are prepared from management accounts spanning two financial years, which can be reconciled to the published accounts for 2007 and 2008.
  16. The 2007/08 HESA Finance Return for London Metropolitan University is based on the institution’s draft consolidated financial statements.
  17. The 2007/08 HESA Finance Return for Leeds College of Music is based on the institution’s draft consolidated financial statements.
  18. The FSR submissions for The University of East Anglia and The University of Essex include figures for income, net return and net assets for the University Campus Suffolk, which is a 50:50 joint venture between these two universities.
  19. From 2007/08 tables 25, 26a, 26b and 26c include all staff. Previously, atypical staff were excluded from these tables.
  20. Academic grade is not applicable for atypical staff.
