JACS (the Joint Academic Coding System) is a way of classifying academic subjects and modules.

A new subject coding system - the Higher Education Classification of Subjects (HECoS) - has been developed to replace the JACS system.

The system is co-owned and maintained by us and UCAS. JACS version 1.7 was introduced in 2002/03 (replacing our previous coding system). It has been revised twice, with JACS 2.0 coming into effect in 2007/08 and JACS 3.0 in 2012/13.
