Third Party Data
HESA data supplies and publications often include derived data that makes use of third party data.
The purpose of this webpage is to identify the license/attributions for usage of third party data in derivations used by HESA or onwardly from our outputs.
For the purpose of this webpage third party data includes any data:
i) which is made available to, or licensed to, HESA or HESA Services Limited by a third party (for example, geographic information may include data from postcode lookup tables owned by the Office for National Statistics);
AND
ii) which is included in any HESA data supply or publication, including, but not limited to:
- HESA statistical publications about students in higher education, including National Statistics publications, statistical bulletins and open data releases (see Official statistics) and online business intelligence and research services;
- HESA data deliveries to statutory customers (see Statutory customers) and HESA subscribers (see Subscription model information);
- HESA data deliveries to higher education funding and regulatory bodies, public authorities and other organisations performing tasks carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller, or for statistical and research purposes;
- HESA data made available in Heidi Plus (Heidi Plus is operated by Jisc Services Limited on behalf of HESA Services Limited - see Jisc - Heidi Plus);
- HESA data delivered as a tailored dataset via Jisc Services Limited (see Jisc - Tailored Datasets and Data Sharing Register); and
- HESA data made available via the Office for National Statistics Secure Research Service.
The tables below lists third party data which falls into the above definition, and the attribution (and any other applicable terms) that should be given and complied with in onward use of that data.
For the avoidance of doubt, these tables do not include any third party data which is used by HESA (for example, to validate HESA data) but is not incorporated into any HESA data supply or publication.
For more information about how data compiled by HESA is used, please see the HESA Collection notices.
For specific information regarding which derived fields are contained within each HESA data collection, please see the relevant coding manual for each data collection available via the Data collection page.
